The Center for Persons with Disabilities at Utah State University continuesits 40^th Anniversary Celebration with a look at disability and humanrights. Two events will examine the place of disability and advocacy inhistory.

The Exhibit, January 9-27

An exhibit on the history of disability and advocacy in thewestern world will be available in Special Collections at the Merrill-CazierLibrary.
It includes panels that outline the history of disability and advocacy. Thiswalk through 3000 years of the human condition is remarkably detailed. It’ssometimes shocking, sometimes poignant, and always informative.

For example, it reveals a dark side to the Greek tradition that reveredperfection in the human body: Aristotle also recommended that there shouldbe a law “to prevent the rearing of deformed children.” In his Politics,Aristotle wrote, “As to the exposure and rearing of children, let there be alaw that no deformed child shall live.”

Here’s another excerpt, from two thousand years farther down thetimeline: The medical model emerged around the 18th century, definingdisability as any one of a series of biological deficiencies located in thebody. … A gradual understanding of science led to new and often painfultreatments for persons with disabilities. People became objects of study, wereused in experiments, and assumed the role of “patients.”

The exhibit will be in the Special Collections area of the Merrill-CazierLibrary. Three cases will also display some of the CPD’s current,disability-related work.

The movie, January 20

The film Lives Worth Living will be screened at the Merrill-Cazierlibrary in room 154 at 1 p.m., and apanel discussion will follow. This event is co-sponsored by the Disability LawCenter. The 55-minute movie was produced by the PBS series Independent Lens, and it documents the history of America’sdisability rights movement.

Space is limited for the screening of the film and panel presentation, andwill be available on a first come, first served basis. Faculty memberinterested in arranging a separate showing of the film and related guestlecture for an individual class should contact Jeff Sheen.

Art for Martin Luther King Jr. Vigil

USU students,faculty and staff are invited to create art work that shares reflections of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. for this year's annual vigil, "Remembering his legacy..." Possible art pieces include but are not limited to poetry, drawings, paintings, sculptures, etc.

The Black Student Union willdisplay these art pieces on Thursday, Jan. 12,2012 at the MartinLuther King, Jr. Annual Vigil, which will be at 5 p.m. in the TSC Ballroom.

"This is a great opportunityto illustrate your talents as well as impact those around you," said Ami Meite, president of USU's Black Student Union.

The art pieces can bedeposited at the Access and Diversity Center located in the TSC. Participants are asked to pick up their Art pieces after the event has ended.To ensure that every piece is returned to the rightful owner, each pieceis tagged and the owner will receive a matching tag as well.

"We hope everyone can participate in this meaningful event, even if it is just by attending," said Meite.

The Bully ProjectFilm Screening and Q&A Session

You might even announce a study group infront of the class, which can impress your professor. Optimal study locations for groups includethe second floor of the Merrill-Cazier Library, lobbies of any on-campus residencehall, and the “fish bowl” study rooms on each floor of the new library (therooms have large windows). Jim Cangelosi Named Utah's 2011 Carnegie Professor of the Year

Jim Cangelosi is Utah's 2011 Carnegie Professor of the Year.

According to Utah State University professor Jim Cangelosi, most people have fallen prey to a common ruse.

“Their experiences with textbook-driven ‘school math’ have left them with the impression mathematics is a robotic activity with either ‘right’ or ‘wrong’ answers,” says Cangelosi, who joined the faculty of USU’s Department of Mathematics and Statistics in 1982. “‘I’m no good at math’ is a common refrain — thus, it’s a joyous challenge for me to immerse students in the culture of authentic mathematics and rock their world.”

Recognized for his dedication to students and contributions to the field of math education, Cangelosi was named a 2011 Carnegie Professor of the Year. One of 31 professors from across the nation selected for this year’s prestigious honor, the Louisiana native’s award was announced at a Nov. 17 ceremony in Washington, D.C.

Administered by the Carnegie Foundation for the Advancement of Teaching and the Council for Advancement and Support of Education, the award recognizes outstanding professors for their influence on teaching and their extraordinary commitment to undergraduate education. Cangelosi is the 11th Utah State professor to receive the award since the program’s 1981 inception. USU has more than twice as many honorees as any other higher education institution in Utah.

“Do the math: Jim Cangelosi has voluntarily expanded his teaching load to 2.5 times the average load for his department and has employed more than 200 students on his funded projects,” says USU President Stan Albrecht. “His commitment to the success of each of his students is incredible and it’s an honor to have him on our faculty.”

USU College of Science Dean Jim MacMahon calls Cangelosi a vital spirit in the college and an accomplished educator of national repute.

“He is well liked and respected among his colleagues, but his students are among his most enthusiastic fans,” MacMahon says.

“Dr. Cangelosi has a way of blending critique with encouragement that leaves me feeling like I am capable of more than I thought possible,” says Morgan Summers ’11. “He does this, in part, by making an explicit distinction between my worth as a person and the quality and value of my work.”

Even in his classes of more than 200 students, Cangelosi makes an effort to watch for “math anxiety” among class members.

“I use a tablet laptop that allows me to circulate through the classroom, while displaying coursework on a large screen,” he says. “This allows me to overhear students’ muted expressions, read their body language and prompt otherwise quiet students to contribute to discussions. I establish a classroom climate where students feel free to experiment and make mistakes without embarrassment.”

Cangelosi’s unorthodox sense of humor helps. Each year, the professor shows up for a class, clad in a white robe and purple sash, as ancient Greek philosopher Pythagoras. Directing students to sit on the floor in a circle, he describes the culture of the Pythagoreans and encourages participants to develop proofs for the Pythagorean Theorem.

“Dr. Cangelosi is an inspirational leader, a friend, a surrogate father, a paradigm and the true heart of the university’s mathematical education program,” says USU alum David Packard, now a teacher at Utah’s Thomas Edison Charter School North. “To his students, he’s the ‘Professor of a Lifetime.’”

Packard was among a group of nearly 100 students and alumni who honored the professor with a surprise appreciation party in 2004. The gathering included custom T-shirts emblazoned with “The Man, the Myth, the Legend” and an image of the professor dressed in — what else? — Pythagorean attire.

“I thought I was going to watch my son perform in a concert, but when I realized my students had gathered for a surprise party in my honor, I almost had a coronary,” Cangelosi recalls. “I was overwhelmed — very touched.”

Among the professor’s claims to fame are the multiple invitations he’s received to escort College of Science valedictorians at commencement — an honor students bestow upon a faculty member who has had the most impact on them. Cangelosi has donned a robe and escorted six valedictorians — a university record.

“Jim inspired me to become a math teacher and employ his methods in my own classroom,” says Erinn Harris ’11. “Because of this, I could see no other professor to choose as my faculty escort at graduation.”

More at home in jeans and a flannel shirt than academic regalia, Cangelosi’s unassuming presence belies a scholar nationally recognized for his research and contributions to his field.

“Jim is ‘Paul Bunyan-like’ not only in appearance but in his tireless efforts to tackle our national crisis in mathematics literacy,” says Richard Cutler, head of USU’s Department of Mathematics and Statistics. “His textbook Teaching Mathematics in Secondary and Middle School: An Interactive Approach is in its third edition and he’s authored ten books on math teaching, academic assessment and classroom management.”

Beyond USU’s campus, Cangelosi, working with the Utah State Office of Education, initiated the Utah Mathematics Endorsement Project in 2007, to deliver advanced distance education courses to public secondary school mathematics teachers throughout the state.

“The UMEP program began as a federal Title IIB grant focused on providing potential mathematics teachers throughout Utah, including those in rural areas, with a way to gain endorsements to teach secondary mathematics,” says Diana Suddreth, USOE teaching and learning specialist in secondary mathematics. “Jim has become a master of using technology to enhance distance instruction. I’ve sat in on a number of his lessons and have been mesmerized by his ability to draw me and other students in as though we’re all sitting together in the same classroom.”

Suddreth adds that Cangelosi is a promoter of collaboration and networking within Utah.

“As a member of the revision committee that produced the new Utah Core Mathematics Curriculum, Jim revealed himself a thoughtful mathematician and dedicated educator as he helped us create a system that students would actually enjoy — not just tolerate,” she says.

Among all his endeavors, Cutler says, Cangelosi sees his highest calling as the education of future teachers of mathematics and statistics.

“USU offers the only undergraduate program in the world that prepares its pre-service mathematics teachers to teach statistics as well as math,” he says. “And though he’s a master at teaching, he stresses to his students that even he continually strives to refine his craft. For Jim, scholarship and teaching are not separate — his scholarship is a direct result of his classroom activity and, in turn, his scholarship enhances his teaching.”

Carriages— not cars — once ruled the road. These forerunners of automobiles and truckswere absolutely essential to American life in the 1800s. Carriages came in anamazing assortment of sizes, shapes, and finishes, from the buckboard phaetonto the sidebar buggy to the booby hut.
Some of the forerunners of the automobile can be seen in the national travelingexhibition Going Places at the Brigham City Museum-Gallery Nov. 10 through Jan.7, including Nov. 25, the day after Thanksgiving. Going Places explores theculture, evolution, and eventual demise of horse-drawn transportation, from theearly nineteenth century, through the industrial revolution, and into the 1900sand the dawn of the automobile age.
The museum is located in the lower level of the Brigham City Community Centerat 24 North 300 West. The entrance is on the west side. Bestselling author Temple Grandin.

She’s been featured in The New York Times, People,and Forbes. She was listed in Time’s list of 100 most influential people in theworld under heroes. A movie based on her life earned 15 Emmy nominations.

Yet Temple Grandin is far from a billionaire. She’san expert on livestock and animal behavior, a bestselling author and aprofessor of animal science at Colorado State University.

Oh yes, and she was born with high-functioningautism.

Diagnosed at 3 years old, Grandin’s mother was toldthat she had brain damage and should be institutionalized. At a time whenlittle was known about autism, her mother scoffed at the suggestion, andinstead began a journey to ensure her daughter had the best opportunitiespossible. She was placed in a nursery school from the time she was a smallchild. Her mother hired a one-on-one speech therapist helping Grandin learn tocommunicate. She graduated from Hampshire Country School, a private schoolfocused on giving gifted children specialty education, in 1966.

Grandin was listed in Time’s list of 100
most influential people in the world.

Sixty-one years later, Grandin, who didn’t utterher first word until 4 years old, holds three college degrees including a Ph.D.in Animal Science from the University of Illinois.

As ateenager, Grandin’s mother sent her West to her aunt’s ranch in Montana to“expose her to new things.” Grandin didn’t know it was a decision that wouldchange her life. On the ranch, Grandin began to realize animals and autisticpeople have similar traits such as taking visual cues and relaxing whenpressure is applied to their body. Using her knowledge and unique perspective,she began to be an advocate for humane beef and pork handling.

After serving as the livestock editor of theArizona Farmer Ranchman for 5 years, Grandin began to more fully understandthat animals put in an unfamiliar places or situations, tense up. This, she found, reduced glycogen levels inthe animals, producing lower quality meat.

Grandin was published in many scholarly journalsbefore fast food chains began to pay attention to her work in the 1990s. In theface of a large lawsuit on counts of animal cruelty, McDonald’s Corporation hiredGrandin to help improve conditions in their slaughterhouses. Seeing that cattlebecame frightened by the straight chute that led to their slaughter, Grandincreated a circular chute so that cattle couldn’t tell where they were going,thus lowering their stress levels. Since then, she has been a voice of changethat has represented fast food chains around the country.

Grandin has writtenmultiple books, including, “Emergence: Labeled Autistic” and “Thinking inPictures" and “Other Reports from My Life with Autism.”

USUProfessor David F. Lancy, 2001's Carnegie Professor of the Year, is spendingmuch of the fall on a lecture tour in Europe at some of the world's mostprestigious institutions.

He delivered his first lecture, on the nature ofapprenticeship, in early October at the Society for the Study of Childhood inthe Past Conference at Cambridge University. He will give a keynote address ata conference on the anthropological study of schooling at Brunel University inLondon in early December.

He has also been invited to consult and speak atOsnabrück University and at L’ecole des Haute Etudes en Sciences Socialein Paris. He will be speaking on his research on children’s work. The specifictopic will be “Les Tâches Ménagères, Agricole et Butinage: L'éducationAvant la Scolarisation” (Household chores, Agriculturaland Foraging: Education Before Schooling). Dr. Lancy is the 2011D. Wynn Thorne awardee at USU, a prestigious honor that recognizes facultyfor outstanding research throughout their career.

Dr. TempleGrandin will soon visit Utah State University. She’s coming to discuss animalhandling, a field she’s revolutionized. She’ll also talk about Autism Spectrum Disorder.

She’s on theautism spectrum herself, and her life experience gives her a refreshing,insider’s approach to the topic. On November 2 she’ll deliver a free public lecture:“All Kinds of Minds Need to Work Together.” She speaks at 4 p.m. in the TaggartStudent Center ballroom.

If anywhereneeds more frank discussion about autism, it’s Utah. Nationwide, one in 110children is diagnosed with ASD. In Utah, the rate is one in 77. That means that two of every 150babies born in the state will experience the significant challenges incommunication, behavior and getting along with others that come with ASD. Thecost of treating autism can total $3.5 million over a child’s lifetime,according to a 2006 Harvard study—including medical care, prescriptionsand intervention.

Autism isn’tjust a hot topic because of the numbers. It’s also hotly debated, as advocates,parents, doctors and researchers seek consensus on its causes and treatment.

That said, somebright spots in the autism puzzle shine right here on the USU campus. All kindsof minds are working together at the Center for Persons with Disabilities to identifyASD and help people on the spectrum to be included in their communities. Programsensure that professionals and future leaders who will be working with childrenand adults on the ASD spectrum will be trained in intervention techniques thatwork.

“We work very hardwith the children to prepare them for success in inclusive settings,” said Dr.Thomas Higbee, who directs the Autism Support Services: Education, Research and Training (ASSERT) preschool program. “Just throwing them into inclusive settingswhen they have not developed the skills to be successful is oftencounterproductive. It is critically important to help them learn effectivesocial skills. Once a student has learned them, it is a great opportunity forthem to have positive experiences that will hopefully motivate them to continueparticipating in social situations.”

The ASSERTclassroom provides instruction to preschool-age children, plus some real-worldexperience to students and graduate students in the field. Many children have graduated from the ASSERTprogram and gone on to mainstream classrooms.

The CPD alsooffers early intervention services offered through the Up to 3 program. Screening services are alsoprovided for people of all ages, using an interdisciplinary approach.

Dr. Grandin has repeatedly said thesensory issues that often accompany ASD should receive more attention. Peopleon the spectrum may be hypersensitive to sounds, textures or smells—and thosesensitivities can further complicate social interactions and even make manyfoods undesirable, affecting the child’s nutrition.

CPD clinics and programs address achild’s sensory difficulties, particularly when it comes to food and nutrition. And over the past 3 years, 26 graduate students orpracticing professionals in health care have received autism-specific trainingso that they can better address the needs of people with ASD in their owncommunities. They received that training through the Utah Regional LeadershipEducation in Neurodevelopmental Disabilities program, co-administered by USUand the University of Utah.

CPD researchers are also working tounderstand the causes of autism. It is a harder task than they anticipated. Althoughgenetic research in autism is a very active field–and many research groupsclaim they have autism-gene associations–only a small percentage of autism casescan firmly be associated with genes, said the CPD’s biomedical laboratorydirector, Dr. Anthony Torres.

“It is my belief thatautism is not caused by one defect,” he said. “If we knew differentgenetic defects for certain groups of patients, we could customize thetreatment.” Dr. Torresand Clinical Services Co-Director Dennis Odell have discovered an associationbetween autism and a gene linked to autoimmune problems.

Whatever thecauses are for ASD, advocates have long speculated that some of the world’sgeniuses, including Albert Einstein, were on the spectrum. In her book The Way I See It, Dr. Grandin had thisto say: “There’s just no black and white dividing line between a computertechie and say, an Asperger’s person. So if we get rid of the genetics thatcause autism, there might be a horrible price to pay. Years ago, a scientist inMassachusetts said if you got rid of all the genes that caused disorders, you’dhave only dried-up bureaucrats left!”

Instead, asher lecture implies, she argues that all kinds of minds should work together.

USU Students Break Kissing World Record

Students at Utah State University broke the world record forthe “longest kissing chain” in the late evening of Friday, Sept. 23. Theprevious record of 303 participants was set at a school in India earlier thisyear. The Aggies set the new world record with 1,450 participants.

Kissing has played an important role in student traditionsat Utah State. The long standing "True Aggie" tradition—a titlegiven to those receiving a kiss on the "A" under a full moon atmidnight by somebody who is already a "True Aggie," or on Homecoming—is a right-of-passage for many students. At one time, USU held the record for“most couples kissing at the same place at the same time.”

“I thought we could organize another world record pretty easily,”said graduate student Michael Wilkey. “We’re Aggies; we can do anything when we’reunited!”

Wilkey, with the help of the USU Student Alumni Association plannedand carried out the event.

“Now we will just wait to hear back from the officials atGuinness World Records,” said Wilkey.

To help ensure that the record would be considered byGuinness, Judge Jeff Burbank and Representative David Butterfield were enlistedto act as judicators.

The world record was held in conjunction with the Utah StateUniversity 2011 Homecoming Week which will conclude with the homecomingfootball game as the Aggies take on the Rams of Colorado State, at 6 PM,Saturday, Sept. 24.

USU is a Princeton Review “Green College”

For two consecutive years Utah State University has been named a Princeton Review “Green College.” Ranked in the top 80^thpercentile of more than 700 schools surveyed, the university wears her green badge with pride.

The "A" Gets a Facelift

If you've walked past the "A" recently, you may have noticed that it rests on the sidewalk, a few feet from where it normally sits. But don't worry, this is just the first incision of some landscape plastic surgery. The 2011 senior class wanted to leave its mark by beautifying the area that has held so many True Aggie Nights.

Graduating seniors donated over $5,000 to refurbish the area surrounding the most recognizable icon at Utah State. The "A" will now sit on a concrete pad, which will stop it from sinking into the soft dirt near the quad. Also, five feet of paver bricks will surround the "A", keeping the area from turning into mud during Homecoming, A-Day and other True Aggie Nights.

“It is our responsibility, as Aggies, to give back to this University," said Tessa Goodall 2011 senior gift chair. "The Senior gift can be our way to show gratitude for the experience USU has provided us.”

When thinking about your dream university, does it include incredible athletics? If so, then look no further, USU might be the place just for you. The Aggie’s just finished up, yet another incredible basketball season! On March 12th, the Aggie’s finished up their regular season by winning the WAC Championship in Las Vegas, NV against Boise State! Final score, 77-69! Congratulations to Tai Wesley who received the “WAC Player of the Year”! Also, a huge congratulations to Head Coach Stew Morrill for winning “Coach of the Year”. Can you believe it’s his 3rd straight win! The Aggie’s had an incredible season with a record of 30-3 and 15-1 in the WAC Conference.

So that means, the Aggie’s are going dancing! The Aggie's will take on Kansas State on Thursday March 17th , 7:55 MST. Good Luck Aggies! Can you believe it? Seniors you are on the home stretch, the final 3 months of your entire high school career! What a huge milestone; one you should be very proud of. Aggie Basketball...what's all the buzz about?

You've heard about Aggie Basketball at USU right? But, have you actually experienced it? There are still four more opportunities to attend an Aggie basketball game this season! Sign up today!

For two of the games, we are hosting our popular “Bring-A-Date to Utah State!” The cost is $20 per couple and includes dinner for two, famous Aggie Ice Cream, two game day t-shirts, two “A” beanies, and two tickets to the game. When should I start thinking about college?

One of the many questions we receive in the Admissions office at USU is when should a prospective student start thinking about college. Our answer to this is NOW! It’s never too soon for a student to begin the process of researching their future at a college or university.

A common misconception for many prospective students, is that the college selection process starts sometime in their senior year of high school. While it’s never too late for a student to begin his or her higher education journey, those who begin early have an advantage. Scholarships usually follow parameters that vary little from year to year. If a student is aware of what is required for a scholarship well in advance (even two and three years before they apply for admissions), then there is time to prepare for those parameters. This pertains to students who wish to apply for both academic and involvement scholarships.

Students, who also start looking at college and universities early, can easily eliminate schools that they aren’t interested in and spend time doing their homework on institutions that interest them. This added time will allow them to visit campuses, research academic programs, and taste the social life of specific schools.

It’s never too late! If you are a 10^th grader still figuring out high school, or a 12^th grader suffering from senioritis, get in contact with the schools that interest you, and we’ll be here to help you decide what’s best for you.

Did I Miss the Deadline?

Applying for admission to colleges and universities can be very stressful. There are several dates and important deadlines that applicants mustn't miss. It can get particularly tricky for students applying to several institutions. Here are a few important dates/deadlines at USU:

Admission Deadline (Fall Semester): April 1st

Incoming freshmen need to have completed everything on the application checklist by
this date if they plan on attending Fall Semester of 2010.

Scholarship Deadlines: -Priority December 1st, -Final Deadline February 1st

Academic scholarships at USU are based off of an Admissions Index for both Resident and Nonresident students. Students who meet the parameters according to the index, and apply for admission to the University before the Priority Deadline, will be guaranteed their earned scholarship.
Awarding of academic scholarships for those who apply after the Priority Deadline will be based on available funding.
Academic scholarships will not be awarded to students who apply after the Final Dead Line.

These are some basic deadlines that students should keep in mind. Other deadlines to track include those of Financial Aid and Freshmen Orientation. Most importantly, check your email! Most departments will let students know of upcoming deadlines via email. By checking his or her email regularly, a student can almost always be well informed of important dates on the horizon.

The Magic of The Spectrum

Ask any student on campus what their favorite activity as Utah State University is, and chances are you will hear, "Going to a game in The Spectrum!" The Dee Glenn Smith Spectrum is home to both the Men's and Women's basketball teams, as well as our volleyball, gymnastics, and other team sports. It is regarded as one of the toughest places for visiting teams to play due to the Aggie Pride and Spirit that exudes from our students.

We want perspective students to feel what it will be like when they are part of the student body by taking them to a game in The Spectrum. Students can sign up for available games here. Enjoy some Aggie Ice Cream before the game, and be ready to cheer on the "Aggie Blue and Fighting White!"

How important is the ACT/SAT?

In our travels as admissions counselors, there is one point that we try to get across to students: The ACT/SAT are very important! These tests will help determine not only what scholarship a student may receive, but also if a student may gain entry into the university of their choice.

For admission into Utah State University in good standing, a student must have a minimum of an 18 ACT score or 860 SAT score (CR+M). As our academic scholarships are based off of an admissions index, depending on a student's GPA, scholarships can be awarded to ACT scores starting at 22+.

The priority dead line for scholarships is December 1st. Students who apply before this date, and meet scholarship parameters, are guaranteed their respective scholarship. For students who wish to take the ACT again in the hopes of meriting a scholarship, Utah State University offers a residual ACT on the main campus in Logan, Ut. The results of this test are giving the same day as it was taken and can be immediately applied for scholarship.

If you are interested in taking the residual ACT please contact the testing center at 435-797-1004. For those of you who will be applying for ACT or SAT, plan on taking the test more than once. As is with any standardized test, the ACT/SAT have their own personalities, once a student can figure out the personality of the test, he or she can then show off their own knowledge.

Utah State University's main campus in Logan, Utah is a sight to behold. Something unique happens to prospective students as they climb the stairs of Old Main Hill, walk the halls of the Taggart Student Center, and enjoy the fresh air on the open Quad; these students envision themselves as actual USU Aggies!

To help students catch the vision, the Admissions Office holds several events that give a glimpse of what USU has to offer. Hosting leadership conferences, campus tours, and even tickets to Aggie football and basketball games, students are presented with several opportunities to take a trip to Logan and see what being an Aggie is all about. And of course students will enjoy some world famous Aggie Ice Cream!
